Feedback from practice pitch

Following my practice pitch I was given a lot of feedback from both my peers and Mrs Eyres. I was initially told that the colour scheme that I had chosen (grey, black yellow and white) was more geared towards the grime genre. I was told to look at competing magazines to get an idea for a more R&B based colour scheme. However I justified my over use of the colour yellow as it was in conjunction with the colour gold which I felt was too tacky to have in my colour palette. Along with this many noticed that I didn't have an online/ digital version of the magazine. Because I didn't include the digital version of my finished products they didn't see that there was a website link on the front cover.

Another concern that was raised was the content of the adverts, the people giving feedback were unclear on what kind of adverts the magazine would be including. They were unsure whether they would be music related, clothing or health and beauty or all of the prior.

Another issue that was brought to my attention was the fact that I wasn't using my resources to the best ability, I wasn't using citizen journalism, this would save the production company money as well as the magazine for not having to pay for trained journalists. Not only where there concerns on the target audience and the demographic of the North London area but the type of people we are trying to attract. Since we used a hobby as the main attraction for the reader the people giving feedback didn't fully understand exactly what the hobby we were portrayed was. To answer that the reader would be someone who enjoys going to local R&B gigs, loves hearing new music from new artists and has a passion for traveling around the city to find new places to go out.

Sponsored content was something that was brought up by one of my peers and by researching into it this could be something that 'Eternal R&B' could take into account, this way the content of the magazine isn't just adverts and music, there are articles that relate to different, perhaps controversial topics that could engage another type of audience. By including sponsored content we are able to incorporate different activities that our readers may enjoy reading and getting involved with.

From this I think I could be asked the following questions...Potential Questions

  1. Do you have a more advanced colour scheme for the magazine?
  2. Why did you choose the colour scheme that you did?
  3. Do you think you will have an online/ digital edition?
  4. Have you got any local competitors?
  5. Who specifically are you aiming this magazine at?
    Final Pitch Feedback

In terms of the final pitch there were more issue brought to my attention including the price of the magazine, there was concern that the magazine was priced very low and the fact that the majority was solely based on adverts and the fact that we would have to rely on people willing to by it to make sure we make a profit. As well as this, there were questions concerning the online version. It was asked if there was any differences or benefits from having the online edition as this would engage more people to pay the extra money for the digital copy. Once again in the final pitch the colour scheme was also something that was brought to my attention as there was 'a lot of yellow' I was asked if there was any additional colour palette that I could use instead as the colours weren't representative enough of the genre. Continuing with the colour scheme I was told I was limiting myself with the palette I had and that I should take a second look and the colours I was using.
I was asked about the logo on the front page, this is the logo that 'Eternal R&B' will be known by. There was also issue with the fact the the logo didn't connect and that it couldn't be easily identified as one whole logo. I was given the advice to connect the image of the boom box so that it flowed as one image. In addition to all this the target audience was an issue that was highlighted as the demographics of North London isn't students like I had previously said.
The final critique that was given to me was about the target audience psychographics, from a business perspective no publication has ever really been successful publication with no specific target audience. They suggested that we should really target a specific group of people to help with the type of content that will go into our magazine.

    D1: Discussing client considerations

The client who listened to my final pitch had many considerations for what I could change about my final idea.

One was the colour scheme, it was said that the yellow was very overpowering and not to do with the R&B genre. I used the yellow to connote the traditional gold colour of R&B. This was because I felt the gold was to forceful and that it wasn't as easy to covey on such a small print without it being too much. Even though the feedback was useful to know I feel that my magazine is portrayed perfectly using my original colour scheme.

I was also informed by him that because there was no difference between my online and print version that not as many people are going to be using/ buying them. It was advised to me to change and add certain aspects to the digital version. This is so more readers will be willing to use the online magazine as they feel they will gain benefits and exclusives that they won't get with the printed copy. To change this I will be adding an interactions for the online version.

As well as the online version I have been told that using other social media platforms will benefit the magazine greatly, for example, there will be a direct Twitter and Instagram link to the magazines pages which will show exclusives pictures from shoots, choice interviews that will only be available on the sites and not in print. This will entice the audience into wanting to know the rest of the interview which they can only view by buying the magazine or using the online subscription. This leaves them wanting more and being eager to buying the magazine.

Taking into account what he said about the logo, I will be changing the way that the images connect, the words 'eternal r&b' have a specific font and he told me  that I should try to transfer the font onto the boom box image so that it all looks connected and together. He said that this would create more meaning to the logo and make sure that it was secure as one whole image and it corresponded with each other.

He was also curious as to why the magazine was priced so low, he made a point that the price should be higher as it is being paid solely by adverts and venues, this can be unreliable and should be thought about again. I, as someone who pays for magazines on a monthly basis, believe that the price is perfectly fit for the target audience as they aren't going to spend more on something so small.

In conclusion I strongly disagree when he told me to re think my colour palette as I have created connotations for the colours as they have specific meanings towards the magazine and my idea. As well as this I won't be taking his advice on raising the price of my magazine as I strongly believe that it won't sell as many copies if the price is higher as not many of our audience have such a high disposable income. I agree with his suggestion to change the logo so that it flows and connects, I will change the boom box to the font that the writing is written in. This shows the connection between the image and the title making the magazine one and not two separate ideas. I will take away the image of the headphones as they are no as relevant as the boom box and only one image is needed. Finally I  will take up his idea of elaborating on my online version as he made the point that I will gain more of an audience by having a digital copy I will expand my audience as the online version will be available on apple and android this lets more people see the website and widens our audience. This will also include other social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter as we can then reach a wider audience and gain more.
